Assignment: For our second essay, we will argue a position concerning an issue in our community. We are faced with situations every day which require us to take a stand or a side and defend our opinion. Learning to do this well, while considering others' opinions, is a key life skill. The essay is worth 20% of your grade.

Essentials: In this essay, we will present a local solution that concerns us, suggest reasons for the situation and support these reasons with evidence, consider our opposition, and use outside research to support our overall argument. The essay will include an introductory paragraph, a paragraph presenting the situation, minimum of three body paragraphs, a refutation paragraph and a concluding paragraph. The essay will include a minimum of three outside sources cited according to MLA style and will end with a Works Cited page.

A note on topics: It is hoped this essay will help you become more engaged in your community and possibly be moved to help create change. Accordingly, all topics must be approved by the instructor and limited to the local level.
