Best Practices for LibGuides

Standard Components of a Research Guide

Naming a Guide

Keep it short and avoid unnecessary words.

  • Subject Guides: use a subject term/terms.  Skip initial articles.
  • Class Guides: ABC 1001 - Professor Last Name, First Name: Title of Assignment

Author Profile

  • Use standard-size photos for your profile.  If a new photo is required, please contact Leonard Ziegler at lziegler@alamo.edu.
  • Add your profile as Profile type box on the left
  • Only one profile per guide is allowed by the system.  Any co-authors may be added as editors.

Related Guides

  • If applicable, place a box with related guides on the left under the author's box.

Welcome Message/About This Guide

  • Add information about this guide under the title in the description.
  • Skip the "welcome" message.

Getting Help/Library Services Boxes

  • Our guides are fully embedded in the library website, including a chat pop-up and contact us.  Your profile with your contact information is also available.  Skip those boxes.

Content Placement

  • Place the most important content at the top of the box.
  • If more than 5-7 resources, consider creating Other Tools list.

Suggested Page Titles

Use applicable pages for your guides. Your home page should include the Tools to Start With and Other Tools but the other pages are up to you depending on the discipline or course.

Other pages as needed and in the following order:
