Case Study:  A 25-year-old woman, in her second trimester of pregnancy, complains of fatigue, shortness of breath, light headedness, and pallor.  Her blood work results show the following:

Hematocrit

Low


She was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and was provided supplements to resolve the problem. 

  1.  What is IDA and how common is it?  Who is at risk?
  2. Explain every test result in the chart above.
  3. Based on your knowledge of the functions of hemoglobin and iron, explain her symptoms.
