March Primary Upset

ELECTION DAY 2014 - Patrick storms into runoff after walloping Dewhurst - Lieutenant governor: Tea party favorite defies odds against incumbent

Houston Chronicle (TX) - Wednesday, March 5, 2014

AUSTIN - Defying expectations, Houston Sen. Dan Patrick clobbered Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in Tuesday's Republican primary, forcing the 11-year incumbent into a runoff as an undeniable underdog in the next round that is expected to be dominated by tea party voters.

Republican voters delivered the stunning blow to Dewhurst - the expected front-runner in the race - and plunged him into a nightmare scenario: a mano-a-mano showdown against Patrick that threatens to mirror Dewhurst's rout at the hands of tea party darling Ted Cruz in the 2012 race for the U.S. Senate.

In the nastiest and most competitive race of the primary season, Patrick's surprise showing in the Republican battle for lieutenant governor was good enough to finish first, but he failed to lock down the majority vote needed to outright win the GOP nomination.

That puts Dewhurst in an unpredictable 11-week runoff against Patrick, who ran the most aggressive and bombastic campaign in the four-way race, much of it devoted to blocking illegal immigration and securing Texas' southern border.
