Short Essay (SLOs 1-5)
Due Date: February 26th
The short essay will follow the MLA heading format. You will be required to take your essay to a tutor for review.
This essay will consist of two parts.
Part I: You will select a published poem by any of the following writers: Jimmy Santiago Baca, Pablo Neruda, C.S. Lewis, Alberto Rios, Walt Whitman, Pat Mora, Emily Dickinson, or Julia Alvarez and in a short three-page essay, you will analyze the work according to the importance of theme, and you will criticize the poem as a reader of poetry focusing on the various literary theories as discussed in class and you will incorporate your researched literary criticism into your critique.
Part II: On a separate page, explain how the poem affected your thinking about the foundations of poetry and your personal reaction to the theme. This section may be written in first person.
