Assignment

CDEC 1319 Guidance for Young Children

Topics:  SPECIAL BEHAVIOR TOPIC ASSIGNMENT (50 points) –Newsletter Article NAEYC Standards for Early Childhood Professional Preparation: Beginning teachers in Early Childhood • Know and understand the multiple influences on development and learning • Know, understand and uses a wide array of effective approaches, strategies, and tools • Have effective written and verbal skills • Have skills in identifying and using professional resources For this assignment, you will choose a topic from the ones provided in class. (Make sure you print your name by your chosen topic.) If you have an alternate special behavior topic that interests you, please speak with your instructor.

Explore at least three resources in relation to your selected topic – focus on information for young children (birth- age eight years). Examples of resources include journal articles (e.g. Young Children, Dimensions of Early Childhood, ACEI Childhood Education), books, videos and agencies or reputable websites. When using the Internet, look for information in .org, .gov. or .edu files. Avoid .com sources (unless it is a reputable organization like the Mayo Clinic) because they are not always reliable. Create a newsletter article (intended for parents and/or teachers) to share information about your topic.

You will also share the information with some of your classmates. • Organize the information to highlight the key points of what you find during your research. Include: 1. a definition of the behavior 2. causes of the behavior 3. specific tips for working with children who are exhibiting this behavior. • Do not cut and paste information from the Internet (with the exception of graphs, charts, and photos). Information must be written in your own words. The newsletter article must be professional looking. All information should be typed and pictures should be included. Use color and other methods to make your article attractive and creative. Bring six copies of the article (enough for everyone in your group).

Notes: The topic is challenging behaviors in young children. Each person will choose from the following topics: biting, shyness, ADHD, lying, physical aggression, temper tantrums, disrespectful language, rough play, super heroes
