Annual Statistics - Reference: Spring 2014

Number of reference questions asked by patrons and answered by librarians.

Spring 2014

In Spring 2014, librarians answered 8,260 reference questions.

Thursday was our overall busiest day. Tuesday was our 2nd busiest. Our busiest days/time (anything over 200) for Spring 2014:

  • Mon - 9-10am
  • Tue - 9-10am, 3-4pm
  • Wed - 1-2pm
  • Thu - 9-10am, 11am-12pm, 1-2pm
  • Fri - 9-10am

Our patrons still prefer to ask for help In person by a whopping 89%. Patrons contacting us through other means (phone calls, texting, email, and Ask a Librarian form) rose slightly to 11%.

Technical questions ((database access, database searching, GoPrint)) accounted for 41% of all questions - slightly less than in the Fall. The rest of the questions show Reference (30%) pulling ahead of Directional (27%).

Now let's look at the type of question asked and how long it took us to answer each question. Compared to Fall 2013, all question types saw increases in the 2-10 min category:

  • 47% of Reference questions: 2-10 min
  • 43% of Reference questions: 1 min or less
  • 7% of Reference questions: 11-20 min
  • 60% of Technical questions: 2-10 min
  • 37% of Technical questions: 1 min or less
  • 79% of Directional questions: 1 min or less
  • 19% of Directional questions: 2-10 min
