Library Research Strategies Assignment: Abstract Exploration on Student Success Purpose
This exercise will help you practice database searching, filtering, and abstract reading using focused issues related to student success. You will prepare for Wednesday’s in-class team article activity, where you’ll make predictions from abstracts in groups.
Step 1: Select a Student Success Issues
Choose 2 issues from the list below to guide your searches:
Time management and procrastination
Study skills and learning strategies
Mental health and stress management
Attendance and class participation
Use of tutoring or academic support services
First-generation college student experiences
Impact of technology and social media on learning
Sleep and academic performance
Motivation and goal-setting
Work–school–life balance
Step 2: Search & Refine
Use your chosen issues as your keywords in the SAC Library Databases.
Record:
Number of results before filters
Number of results after applying librarian led filters
Step 3: Abstract Exploration - Worksheet Provided
Select 3 different articles connected to each issue.
For each abstract:
Write down 2–3 keywords/terms you notice.
Write a short prediction about what you think the article will argue, focus on, or conclude.
Copy the APA citation.
Step 4: Compare & Reflect
Compare across your 3 abstracts:
How did the focus differ (e.g., methods, populations, interventions)?
Did your predictions change as you read more abstracts?
Write a brief reflection (5–7 sentences).
Step 5: Submit
Turn in worksheet at dismissal.
