Essay 4: Taking a Stand
1. Develop a sophisticated argument on whether the use of solitary confinement is an
effective practice in prisons or that it causes more harm than benefit as it is
discussed in the Frontline report Solitary Nation.
2. Consult Chapter 8 of The Bedford Guide and the PDF document on the Classical Structure of an Argument located in Canvas.
3. Watch the entire 60-minute Frontline report and take notes on the ways the
prison system uses solitary confinement and the effects it has on inmates and
those who work in the prison.
4. Familiarize yourself with the experts who testify in the report because opinions
cannot be advanced effectively in an argument without supporting evidence that is
thorough and unbiased.
5. Consider how the facts, statistics, firsthand observations, and testimonies of
experts appeals to your audience’s logic, ethics, and emotions to make the most
benefit to your argument.
6. Provide supporting evidence for your claims (reasons) in the form of direct
quotes from the online articles or transcript provided in the Frontline report that
are available at the PBS Frontline website:
Solitary Nation
7. Compose a 1,000 word essay in which you develop your position using all the
elements of a good argument—background, confirmation, concession,
refutation, effective use of appeals, and no logical fallacies.
