Authority Control

Definition: the practice of creating & maintaining headings for bibliographic material in Library Discovery. Its two most important functions are allowing catalogers to distinguish items with similar or identical headings; and it allows catalogers to group materials that belong together by establishing uniform headings. Since all the authority control manuals highly recommend only one authority control manager for a system, the Alamo Colleges indeed have one authority control manager, with one backup librarian in case the manager drops dead.
