All of your essays will be written in third person (the use of he/she/it) except for essay #1. Each essay will be double spaced following the MLA heading and page guidelines. The essay must be typed in 12 point, Times New Roman font and must follow all of the internal and work cited guidelines of MLA references. Each essay will include a brainstorming unless there is one specific brainstorming required in the instructions, a topic outline referencing your organization of the paper, and a works cited page. You will be required to take each essay to a tutoring session at the SAC Writing Center (2nd floor Gonzales Hall)/SLAC (7th floor MLC) /the online tutoring program, Brain Fuse/DSS Tutoring for DSS enrolled students/VA Tutoring for Veteran students. This tutor review will be factored into each of your essay grades, so schedule your tutor appointments ahead of time. When you meet with your tutor, please take this assignment packet and your paper, so that the tutor can identify what is being asked of you to write for each assignment. All of the rhetorical modes listed below are referenced in our class textbook, The Bedford Guide for College Writers with Reader, Research Manual, and Handbook, 10th Edition, by X.J. Kennedy, Dorothy Kennedy, and Marcia Muth.
#1- Definition
For this definition essay, you will choose from one of the following topics: 1) Recycling, 2) Alzheimer’s, and 3) Pollution. The paper length requirement is a minimum of three-typed pages with references from one journal article, one book, and a magazine. All references must be cited within the paper and on the works cited page. A personal interview could be used as an additional source if necessary, and you will select a brainstorming technique from those identified in our textbook.
#2- Comparison and Contrast
For this comparison and contrast essay, you will compare and contrast two different businesses one will be an old-fashioned type of a business compared to a franchise or corporate model; for example, The Twig Bookstore compared and contrasted to Barnes and Noble; a neighborhood grocery store compared and contrasted with the HEB Central Market; a “mom and pop” restaurant compared and contrasted with a McDonald’s. The length requirement is a minimum of three typed pages. You will need to include references from two books, two websites, and a newspaper article/personal interview. You will need to include a brainstorming of a T-chart or Venn diagram.
#3- Argumentation
For this argumentative essay, you will choose a topic of your choice, but it must follow the argumentation pattern. The length requirement is a minimum of four typed pages and you will need to include references from two journal articles, a book, a website, and a personal interview.
